Once again the US automotive industry is in dire straits. It did not learn from the 1973 energy crisis. It did not learn from the Chrysler experience. It did not learn from Toyota. It continued to depend on old, worn out concepts and on CEO's that are kept in their positions by nepotism and by boards that do not understand the automotive business.
In a joint effort the Big Three are asking the US government for a $25 billion loan. They argue that government demands for increased fuel efficiency are too expensive to implement and require huge amounts of capital for retooling.
Let's assume for the moment that the argument has some merit. But how can companies with worldwide manufacturing facilities fail to notice the steady increase in fuel prices and not see the warning signs hoisted by governments across the world that want to limit greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption. This neglect is inexcusable.
Efforts of US and European governments to limit fuel consumption are misdirected, counterproductive, and coercive. A comprehensive analysis quickly reveals that we must indeed limit and eventually halt greenhouse gas emissions.
OPEC countries will continue their unstoppable increases of petroleum prices. Electric cars, CNG powered cars, and hydrogen powered cars cannot stop carbon dioxide emissions perceptibly and will not make our country independent of OPEC imports.
Automotive companies are critically dependent on the fickle and changing preferences of national and international markets. Industrial companies that follow political hype will be punished sooner or later. Governments are incapable of designing automobiles for the market place.

It doesn’t look very zoom-zoom in its dull olive camouflage, but this is the all-new Mazda 3, set to hit UK showrooms at the end of 2009.

And despite the disguise it's clear that the 3 is taking styling cues from its sporty big brother, the Mazda6. The swooping projector headlamps, angled tail lights and stumpy rear end all ape the bigger Mazda’s look. Sources say the 3 is a similar story inside too, with features such as heated seats, multi-function steering wheel and a hard drive for mp3 files filtering down from the 6.

The Mazda 3 hatchback sits on the latest Ford Focus C1 platform, so dynamically the newcomer should compete with the best in class. And it’s undergone a mechanical makeover too, gaining an extra cog and more powerful engines, meaning a six-speed ‘box mated to 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre direct injection engine – the latter good for at least 180bhp.

Auto Express Car Reviews22nd May 2008SEAT gave the all-new Ibiza its world debut at the Madrid Motor Show. Bosses took the wraps off the supermini at the Spanish brand’s home event, alongside a low emission version of the Alhambra MPV.

The five-door Ibiza will hit UK showrooms in July priced from around £9,000, and the three-door SportCoupé will follow in the autumn. And British car fans will be the first to see it, because the sporty model will make its official debut at British Motor Show in London this summer.

The Ibiza is the first car to use VW Group’s new small car platform, codenamed BQ35, which will also provide the basis for the next generation VW Polo and the new Audi A1.

The new Ibiza line-up will include hot FR and Cupra models, as well as a low CO2 ECOmotive variant. The sporty versions will arrive next year and are expected to use VW’s clever turbo and supercharged 1.4-litre TSI engine. The ECOmotive model will feature an economical diesel tuned to deliver fewer than 100g/km of CO2.

The green Alhambra ECOmotive features a range of revisions to trim emissions and boost economy. They include tweaked gear ratios, low rolling resistance tyres and a remapped ECU for the 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI engine. The result is CO2 emissions of 159g/km.

It will go on sale in July priced at around £19,200 – which is just £350 more than the standard 2.0-litre TDI Reference.
