I would suggest to get started with rc cars and then see if rc boats are really the way you want to go. However let me make it very clear that it's not a hard and fast rule at all to start with cars or trucks. You may opt for airplanes, boats or helicopters as well.
Be whatever the option you choose make sure you stick to it for some time and go through the learning curve which at times can be steep in terms of time and money.
